KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - A southwestern Michigan mother was charged Thursday with murder, child abuse and torture in the death of her daughter on the girl’s fourth birthday.

Daveeta Walker, 25, was arraigned Thursday in Kalamazoo.

Officers responding to a 911 call at a Kalamazoo apartment on March 26 found Kharisma Richardson unresponsive and not breathing. An autopsy showed she had blunt force trauma injuries and burns with blisters on her feet.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting displayed a photo of the girl at a news conference on Thursday, saying: “You can’t look at that picture and not have it affect you.”

“It’s hard to describe the impact of a case like this,” Getting said. “We’ve lost someone in our community without them ever having had an opportunity to contribute.”

The night officers arrived at Walker’s home, they found three other children in a bedroom watching a pornographic movie, according to WOOD-TV. They were removed from Walker’s custody.

A parental rights termination trial is scheduled Aug. 16 in family court for Walker’s three sons, ages 6, 5 and 2.
