ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Buffalo Springs man has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison for involuntary manslaughter.

Prosecutors say 48-year-old Jay Barton received a 97-month prison term Thursday in federal court in Albuquerque.

Barton was arrested in August 2015 on a criminal complaint charging him with killing a man that month in New Mexico’s McKinley County.

Prosecutors say Barton and the victim had been drinking when an argument occurred and the other man was stabbed in the chest, abdomen and back.

Barton was subsequently indicted on a voluntary manslaughter charge last September.

He pleaded guilty in the case in January and the plea agreement said both Barton and the victim were intoxicated at the time of the stabbing.
