MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Democratic Wisconsin Senate candidate Russ Feingold is endorsing presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for president.

In a statement Thursday, Feingold says Clinton won a hard-fought campaign and made history. He says it’s clear she’s ready to take on presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

Feingold also congratulates Sen. Bernie Sanders, saying he’s done incredible work to build a movement behind issues for middle-class and working families.

Feingold is running against Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, who supports Trump for president but says that’s different from endorsing him. A Marquette University Law School this month shows Trump trailing Clinton in Wisconsin by 9 points among likely voters.

Wisconsin Republican Party spokesman Pat Garrett says in a statement Feingold and Clinton are Washington insiders who have fallen out of touch with the people.
