RANTOUL, Ill. (AP) - Officials say 17 calves are dead after a semi-trailer carrying 93 calves to Iowa overturned on a central Illinois interstate ramp.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/28QeEnP) that Rantoul Foods livestock procurement manager Jan Allen says the animals died in the Thursday morning wreck or had to be euthanized.

Illinois State Police trooper Bobby Woodard says the truck driver failed to negotiate a curve. The driver wasn’t injured. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Firefighters responded and sprayed water on the calves to keep them cool in the hot weather. The animals each weighed between 400 and 500 pounds.

Officials say no animals escaped and the surviving calves were taken to Rantoul Foods until they can be taken to Iowa.
