ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The city of Asheville is on pace to have its most homicides in more than a decade.

The Asheville Citizen-Times (https://avlne.ws/28ZXjde ) reports that city police have investigated seven homicides since Jan. 1, the same number of killings that occurred all of last year.

Over the past five years, the city has had an average of six killings per year. There were 10 in 2007.

Statistics released last month from The Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law show that Asheville is one of more than two dozen U.S. cities that has had a greater number of homicides in the first few months of the year compared to the beginning of 2015.
