THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - A revived effort to shrink the size of the Lafourche Parish School Board from 15 members to nine has passed its first hurdle.

The Lafourche Parish Finance Committee sent a proposal Wednesday to the full board that would authorize the board’s attorney to determine whether the board can legally reduce the number of its members.

The Daily Comet reports (https://bit.ly/28Vo5pJ) the proposal will go before the board on July 6.

If the board drops four members, Business Manager Don Gaudet said it would directly save more than $39,000 per year. The number rises to more than $58,000 if they drop six members and more than $77,000 if they drop eight.

But critics of the idea say 15 is the right number for the length of the parish — almost 100 miles from top to bottom.
