LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Residents of six Lincoln homes had to be evacuated when their basements and yards were flooded with sewage after a construction crew tore open a sewage line.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/28TSn95 ) that the homes were evacuated Thursday night after the accident in the area of Northwest 49th and West Madison streets.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue Capt. Jeff Topil says firefighters responded to a call around 8 p.m., but that some neighbors complained as early as 12:30 p.m.

Some homes had up to two inches of raw sewage in their basements.

City officials say the private contractor was working on a street project for the city. The city is not claiming responsibility, but says people affected can file a claim with the city attorney’s office.
