FULTON, Mo. (AP) - State officials say construction of the first phase of the new Fulton State Hospital is completed.

Gov. Jay Nixon, along with Mental Health and Office of Administration officials, toured the $23.1 million Energy Control Center on Thursday. It will house dietary services, the communication center, materials management and computer information. Dietary service employees will move into the ECC in mid-July.

The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/28VUtbI ) construction of the main building is next, starting with an administration building.

The main hospital will hold 300 beds in maximum-security and intermediate security areas.

The Legislature approved the $211 million project in 2014. The former Fulton State Hospital was built in 1851 and was the oldest psychiatric facility west of the Mississippi River.
