MONTVILLE, N.J. (AP) - Two former star high school athletes killed in a crash on an interstate highway in New Jersey are being laid to rest.

Families and friends gathered Friday for funerals for 19-year-olds Samuel Cali and Leonidas Vagias.

The standout athletes who graduated last year from Don Bosco Prep were found Monday morning by a state transportation department worker in the woods near I-287 southbound in Mahwah.

Vagias was a kicker/punter with the University of Rhode Island football team - although he didn’t play in any games this past season - while Cali was a wrestler at Rutgers University.

The Record reported (https://bit.ly/28SBYmp ) that Mark Olenowski, pastor of Saint Pius X Church in Montville, told mourners that Cali was “kind-hearted” and a man of “sensitivity and poise.”
