BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - A southwest Florida man faces up to 30 years in prison for fatally shooting his then-girlfriend’s estranged husband.

The Bradenton Herald (https://goo.gl/cAubEZ) reports that jurors found 29-year-old Jared Lakes guilty Thursday of manslaughter with a firearm. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 18.

Defense attorneys say Lakes shot 28-year-old Shawn McCoy in self-defense in July 2014. McCoy was dropping off his four children at the home his estranged wife, Ashley Brining, shared with Lakes, when Brining testified that McCoy began yelling at her.

Lakes demanded McCoy leave, and the two men began to fight, eventually moving outside. Prosecutors say Lakes retrieved a gun from his car and shot McCoy.

Prosecutors argued that Lakes had ample opportunity to leave the fight and was not in fear for his life.
