LITTLETON, N.C. (AP) - A 15-year-old North Carolina boy has set a new record for the heaviest blue catfish to have been caught in the state.

The North Carolina Wildlife Commission said in a news release that Landon Evans, of Benson, caught a 117-pound, 8-ounce fish on June 11 on Lake Gaston, breaking the previous record by 10 pounds.

The fish measured 55 inches in length and 40.5 inches in girth. In order to qualify for a freshwater fish state record, anglers must have caught the fish by rod and reel or cane pole and have the fish weighed on a certified scale.

Lake Gaston is a hydroelectric reservoir that stretches into Virginia from the North Carolina counties of Halifax, Northampton, and Warren.
