NEW YORK (AP) - Police say the elderly driver who caused a fatal crash in New York City last weekend has died.

Police say 78-year-old Barbara Capone died on Thursday. The Staten Island woman had been hospitalized in critical condition following Sunday’s crash.

Police say Capone was in a minor accident on Staten Island and then sped off at a high rate of speed. She then slammed into numerous other vehicles that were stopped at a red light.

Her car hurtled into the air and was hit by several other vehicles after landing in the intersection.

Police say 75-year-old John Gunshefski of Bayonne, New Jersey, was killed. His wife, Joanne, was hospitalized in critical condition with severe head injuries.

Thirteen people in all were hurt in the 10-vehicle crash.
