PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police say they’ve made an arrest in the slaying of a former Providence high school basketball standout.

Maj. David Lapatin says the man, who the department is not yet identifying, will be arraigned in District Court Monday.

He’s being charged in the death of 22-year-old Kip Stewart, who was shot in the head at the Hartford Park housing complex the night of June 18. Stewart died Monday at Rhode Island Hospital, marking the city’s third homicide of 2016.

Raised in the housing project, Stewart had been a point guard for Mount Pleasant High School’s basketball team. He had been living in Warwick and attending community college at the time he was killed.

Police say the gunman shot at a group of people and Stewart was likely not the intended target.
