NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a teenager is dead after he fell from a New York City apartment building.

Police say the 17-year-old boy apparently climbed a wire on his Bronx apartment building Wednesday morning and plunged four stories to his death.

The apartment is located in the neighborhood of West Farms.

WNBC-TV reports that police believe his death is an accident.

Donnile Purvis tells the New York Daily News he was with the teen minutes before the fall and that his friend was trying to get into his apartment using a wire that was against a wall.

Purvis says the teen was struggling when the wire popped. He says his friend struck an air conditioner and a fence.

Building workers say youths sometimes climb down from the roof using the wire.
