AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Texas Board of Criminal Justice has named 51-year-old Bryan Collier executive director of the state prison system.

Collier had been deputy to retiring Department of Criminal Justice Executive Director Brad Livingston since 2007.

Prison Board Chairman Dale Wainwright, whose nine-member panel made the appointment Friday at a board meeting in Austin, says Collier brings knowledge and experience after working more than 31 years within the agency.

Collier joined the department in 1985 as a clerk and also has worked as a corrections officer, parole officer, unit supervisor, program administrator and parole division director.

He takes over an agency that has 38,000 employees, a more than $3 billion budget and houses nearly 147,000 inmates.

Livingston held the state’s top prison job for nearly 12 years.
