LOS ANGELES (AP) - Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who were shot in gun battles with a fleeing suspect are off the critical list.

The Sheriff’s Department reports Saturday that a deputy who underwent surgery is hospitalized in serious condition but he’s improving. The other deputy has been released from the hospital and recovering at home.

The deputies were wounded late Thursday after a driver drove through a DUI checkpoint in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower.

Three separate gun battles followed until the man ran to a home where authorities say he took a man hostage.

The hostage managed to escape and tear gas was used to force the gunman from a small building behind the home.

Thirty-nine-year-old Juan Martinez wasn’t wounded during the confrontations. He remains jailed on $10 million bail.
