DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Hordes have descended on Des Moines for the city’s annual arts festival, despite soaring summer temperatures.

Television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/28Sskie ) that large crowds attended the Des Moines Arts Festival’s opening night on Friday. About 250,000 people are expected to gather for the festival this weekend.

Artist Josh Cote traveled to the festival from North Carolina, one of 37 states represented this year.

He says he loves the reactions to his intricate wire sculptures that use salvaged steel.

Cote said his largest pieces take about a month to create, and several of them already have new homes. One sold for $950.
