SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A Jackson-area man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2014 New Year’s Eve death of his mother.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports (https://bit.ly/290dl7Z ) 31-year-old Matthew King was declared legally insane Friday by a judge after accepting King’s plea. Authorities say King told them he killed Kristy King following an argument and put her body in the basement of his Summit Township home.

Prosecutors and psychiatrists say King was incapable of recognizing reality when he’s not undergoing treatment. A psychiatric report says he lacked the capacity to understand his actions and has delusions.

A judge ordered King to continue receiving psychiatric care. State law requires his case receive annual court reviews until he’s considered able to re-enter society.

King was originally charged with open murder.
