RUGBY, N.D. (AP) - A city in northern North Dakota has elected its first ever female council member.

The Minot Daily News (https://bit.ly/28WZn7d ) reports that Sue Steinke has been elected to the city council in Rugby.

Steinke says she is pleased that city has “now passed this threshold of electing a woman.” She says she is “honored” to be a councilwoman.

Steinke owns a company that provides tax preparation, bookkeeping and other services. She is also the financial manager for a printing company.

Steinke says the election ultimately is “not about gender, it’s about serving the citizens of Rugby and serving them well.” But she says she hopes other women in the community will want to run for a seat on city council.

Rugby was founded in 1886. It has around 2,900 residents.
