MOULTONBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) - The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a large home on an island in Lake Winnipesaukee.

Officials say the fire started at about 8 p.m. Friday at a shorefront home on Long Island in Moultonborough.

WMUR-TV reports (https://bit.ly/28XfLX3 ) that the flames could be seen from across Winnipesaukee - the state’s largest lake.

More than 60 firefighters worked to battle the blaze, some pumping water out of the lake to try to douse the flames.

Moultonborough Fire Chief David Bengston says no one was home at the time of the fire. He asked for state fire investigators’ assistance in the investigation, which he said is routine for “large dollar losses.”

Crews remained at the scene overnight and through Saturday to monitor the embers.
