JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Commissions on consolidating school districts in Lumberton and Chickasaw County will start their work this week.

A panel that will decide how to divide the Lumberton school district between the Poplarville and Lamar County districts will meet Tuesday at William Carey University in Hattiesburg. A state law passed by the Legislature earlier this year requires the Lumberton district to be abolished by July 1, 2019. The law requires the consolidation panel to make a “reasonable effort” to maintain a school in Lumberton and says the plan could allow for automatic transfers to that school by current students.

A panel examining Chickasaw County, Houston and Okolona districts will meet Wednesday in Houlka. (HUHLK’-uh) Lawmakers decided not to order those three districts’ consolidation, instead requiring a study with possible future action.
