ORONO, Maine (AP) - High school students and teachers from Maine and elsewhere in the country are coming to the University of Maine for a program to create environmental solutions to stormwater management.

The university says the event will bring students from 16 Maine high schools and one each in New York and Missouri. The students will work with university facility, students and others during the program from Sunday to June 29.

The program is called the UMaine Stormwater Management Research Team (SMART) Institute and it’s in its third year. The university says the program engages students in the implementation of science to address an environmental issue. About 85 students and 20 teachers are expected.

Many cities wrestle with how to environmentally and efficiently handle stormwater runoff, which can be an expensive problem.
