Catholic League President Bill Donohue said Tuesday that he is the one who deserves an apology from the LGBT community after Pope Francis urged Christians to seek forgiveness from gay people and others who have been offended by the church.

The pope said Sunday that the church “must ask forgiveness for not behaving many times.”

“When I say the Church, I mean Christians! The Church is holy, we are sinners!” the pope said at a press conference aboard the papal plane returning from Armenia. “I believe that the church not only should apologize to the person who is gay whom it has offended, but has to apologize to the poor, to exploited women, to children exploited for labor; it has to ask forgiveness for having blessed many weapons.”

Asked by CNN’s Chris Cuomo if he wanted to heed the pope’s advice, Mr. Donohue answered, “No. As a matter of fact, I want an apology from gays. I’ve been assaulted by gays. I’ve never assaulted a gay person in my entire life.”

“Now, if a Catholic or Protestant or Jew or Muslim has offended a gay person or anybody, of course they should apologize,” he said.

“If I’ve done something wrong, I would [apologize],” he said.

Mr. Cuomo argued that Mr. Donohue should be out advocating for the poor and “things that are good” instead of spending so much time fighting the LGBT community.

“Why do you spend so much energy on this? Why is it so important to you to denounce gays?” Mr. Cuomo asked.

Mr. Donohue claimed it was the only issue Mr. Cuomo’s producers have ever asked him about. He then said that when he was in the Air Force, he often defended gay servicemen who were being bullied.

“I don’t want to have a lifestyle thrusted in my face though,” he added. “That’s a different kind of thing altogether. But if two people who love each other are the same sex, it’s none of my business.”

However, Mr. Donohue said it’s OK to condemn “certain manifestations.”

“[Pope Francis] has said that gay marriage is the work of the devil,” he said. “He has said that gender ideology — you know, the trans, the trans people — he says that gender ideology is demonic. That is the pope that I like.”

“Your status as a gay person is irrelevant, it’s morally irrelevant,” he said. “You’re a child of God, you have the same opportunity going to heaven as anybody else. Behavior is different. Straight people do all kinds of different things sexually that the church doesn’t approve of.”

Mr. Donohue said he is deserving of an apology from a group of gay demonstrators who allegedly assaulted him after he took a picture of a piece of artwork in a gay parade.

“I didn’t go to the cops because I’m not a whiner like some people who claim to be a victim every time,” he said. “I just want the apology. I think they could send it by FedEx.”
