BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A judge has temporarily blocked the Buffalo school district from taking away a cosmetic surgery benefit for teachers.

The Buffalo Teachers Federation sought the temporary restraining order after the school board voted earlier this month to eliminate the health insurance rider as part of next year’s budget.

Wednesday’s order puts the decision on hold pending a union challenge. The union says taking away cosmetic surgery would cause irreparable harm to at least 10 teachers or family members, including a 1-year-old girl who was severely burned.

The rider is part of a teachers’ contract that expired in 2004 but is still in effect because the district and teachers haven’t been able to agree on a new contract. The union has said it’s willing to give it up under a new agreement.
