FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) - A suburban Detroit police officer is charged with assault and battery involving a larceny suspect who was handcuffed and face-down on the ground during an arrest.

WDIV-TV and The Detroit News report Wednesday that the April 18 incident in Ferndale was captured on police video.

Police say Officer Jason White and his partner stopped two men after responding to a resident’s complaint that something was stolen from a vehicle.

The video shows an officer punching one of the men during the arrest. An investigation determined excessive force was used.

Ferndale Police Chief Timothy Collins said in a statement that he was “deeply troubled” by what he saw on the video.

White resigned May 1 and was arraigned this week. The Associated Press was unable to reach him Wednesday for comment.
