UTICA, N.Y. (AP) - Officials say a man suspected of shooting another man in the Mohawk Valley repeatedly pointed a gun at police during a foot chase and was shot by pursuing officers.

Police responded to reports of a dispute in Utica Tuesday night and saw the suspect take off.

Police Chief Mark Williams says the man pointed a handgun multiple times at two pursuing officers. He was shot by an officer in a parking lot. A handgun was found at the scene.

Officials say the officer will be placed on paid leave pending an investigation.

Williams says the victim of the earlier shooting is hospitalized for a non-life-threatening lower body gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered from that scene.

The names of the suspect and the victim haven’t been released.
