LA BELLE, Pa. (AP) - State police and prison officials are trying to determine whether an inmate who died after being found unresponsive in his southwestern Pennsylvania cell had been assaulted by another inmate.

Fifty-one-year-old John Steckley died at a Pittsburgh hospital on Sunday. He was found unresponsive by officers on routine rounds at the State Correctional Institution-Fayette on June 19.

The Allegheny County medical examiner is investigating the physical cause of Steckley’s death because he died in Pittsburgh. But state authorities are trying to determine whether he was assaulted at the prison about 40 miles south of Pittsburgh.

Steckley had been at the prison since December 2008. He was serving a 10- to 22-year sentencing for aggravated assault out of Philadelphia, where he was convicted in September 2006.
