HAMMOND, La. (AP) - State investigators say 18 heifers stolen from Iberville Parish were abandoned by a highway in a trailer stolen from a second farmer in Iberville Parish.

Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry spokeswoman Veronica Mosgrove says the truckload of cattle was found Monday next to Interstate 12 near Hammond. She says in a news release that it took a while to find the owner, because the cattle hadn’t been ear-tagged or branded.

Mosgrove says the Brangus heifers were to be returned to their owner Wednesday.

They were kept at Amite Stockyard while the department’s brand commission and law enforcement looked for leads.
