NORWICH, Conn. (AP) - A Norwich man charged with killing his pregnant wife and burning their apartment told police she was a voodoo priestess who had cast spells on him.

The Hartford Courant reports Patrick Antoine said his wife was eight months pregnant with a child he believed was not his. Antoine said she told him he would be dead by July as a sacrifice before the child’s birth.

The report indicated Antoine stabbed Margarette Mady multiple times before setting fire to the curtains.

Patrick Antoine was charged with murder and first-degree arson and ordered held on a $2 million bond following his arraignment Friday.

Firefighters responding to the second-floor apartment just before 11 a.m. Thursday found an unresponsive woman suffering from burns and stab wounds. She was pronounced dead.

Police said at about the same time, the 39-year-old Antoine turned himself in at police headquarters.
