FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say an Illinois man tried to set fires to kill someone in southeast Iowa in order to pay off a $300 debt.

Court records say 38-year-old Timothy Brownlee, of Macomb, Illinois, is charged in Lee County, Iowa, with two counts of attempted murder and arson and with other crimes. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call Friday from The Associated Press.

Authorities say Brownlee’s accused of trying to set a Fort Madison house ablaze on Jan. 1 and of successfully torching the house on Feb. 7. The occupants were not injured.

Fort Madison police say Brownlee set the fires because he’d been asked by someone to whom he owed $300 to kill a resident at the house. Police have not reported any related arrests.
