WASHINGTON (AP) - An inmate has been charged in connection with a one of two fights that happened at the District of Columbia jail.

The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/1Uj0lHc) 26-year-old Vernon P. Hedrick was charged Thursday with assault with a dangerous weapon in last week’s incident.

A police report says Hedrick is accused of stomping on the head of another inmate several times on May 26 before being subdued by correctional officers.

Another fight also occurred that night at the jail involving several inmates who were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after they were stabbed or cut with homemade shanks and weapons.

Corrections spokeswoman Sylvia Lane said on Tuesday that no charges had been filed in the second fight.

It is unclear if the two incidents were related.
