FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Plans call for rebuilding a hoop house used for growing vegetables at a Flint elementary school after it was scorched by fire.
The Flint Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1VB7YOa ) hay in front of the structure was set on fire Tuesday night at Pierce Elementary and witnesses told firefighters they saw a group of kids run away afterward. The hoop house was damaged and the plastic covering it was melted away.
LaBria Lane, a FoodCorps Service Member, says seeing the damage felt like a slap to the face. She says the hoop house previously was targeted by vandalism. In that case, plants were ripped apart and rulers used to measure vegetable growth were broken.
Lane plans to rebuild the hoop house, which is part of the Crim Fitness Foundation’s FoodCorps garden education program.
