SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the state penitentiary in Salem.

A Department of Corrections spokeswoman says 41-year-old Anthony Powell was found dead in his cell Thursday evening. He was the sole occupant of the cell.

Powell was serving a life sentence for the 1995 stabbing death of his mother-in-law.

Court records and newspaper articles from the mid-1990s show Powell was 20 at the time of the killing and married to a 41-year-old Eugene woman. They had been temporarily staying at the mother’s home in Gresham.

Powell’s wife pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 17-year prison sentence.

In 1999, Anthony Powell stabbed an inmate in the neck at a Umatilla County prison. He was convicted of assault, attempted murder and inmate with a weapon.
