SPRINGDALE, Ohio (AP) - Police near Cincinnati say a suspect shot a police dog during a chase before officers fired back, hitting the man.

Police in Springdale say both are expected to recover.

The chase happened early Friday morning. Police say officers tried to stop a suspected drunken driver, but the man jumped out the car with a gun and ran away.

Springfield Township Police Chief Robert Browder says a police dog named Pako bit the suspect and that’s when the man shot the dog in the shoulder.

He says officers then fired back, hitting the man in the back.
