IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Davenport woman is now facing an attempted murder charge after authorities said she tried to flush her newborn down a toilet last month and left it for dead in a trash can.

University of Iowa police said 22-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader gave birth to the child May 8 in a bathroom at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Police say Hautzenrader tried to flush the baby then put it in a pillowcase and left it in a trash can. A hospital employee found the newborn alive.

The new charge is in addition to a child endangerment charge.

Hautzenrader admitted that she left the child in the trash because she thought it had died. The baby’s condition is unknown.

Her attorney didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.
