FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Police in Fayetteville are investigating after five people were killed and three injured in a crash that Police Chief Harold Medlock calls the worst he has seen in his career.

Medlock tells reporters the accident involving three vehicles happened about 8 p.m. Wednesday. The names of those who died were not immediately released.

The chief says four people died at the scene while four others were taken to local hospitals where one of them later died.

Medlock says authorities are investigating whether the accident may have resulted from an earlier altercation at a nearby business.

He says witnesses reported seeing a motorcycle at the scene. He said no motorcycle was found in the wreckage and police are investigating whether one was involved.
