BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The population of North Dakota’s capital city has grown by nearly 10,000 people in six years.

Census Bureau data estimates Bismarck’s population last July at more than 71,000 people. The population in neighboring Mandan has exceeded 21,000.

Mandan Mayor Tim Helbling tells The Bismarck Tribune (https://bit.ly/294WPlp ) that the rising population will bring restaurants and retail the city needs. Bismarck Mayor Mike Seminary says he expects the growth to continue.

The Bismarck-Mandan metropolitan area is now home to nearly 130,000 people. The metro area includes Burleigh, Morton, Oliver and Sioux counties.
