EASLEY, S.C. (AP) - The Pickens County coroner says a man found dead after shooting his neighbor and barricading himself from police took a fatal overdose of painkillers prescribed to him.

Coroner Kandy Kelley said 59-year-old Calvin Benton Jr. died May 11, but it took weeks to get toxicology tests back.

Authorities say Benton shot his neighbor on her porch, then went inside his own home and locked the door when deputies arrived.

Investigators say a SWAT team tried to talk to Benton, but didn’t get an answer for about three hours. They forced their way inside and found Benton dead.

Kelley says Benton had heart disease and emphysema that contributed to his overdose death.
