EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (AP) - Police say a customer at a Tennessee gas station has fatally shot a man who was allegedly robbing the place and threatening to kill the clerk.

East Ridge Police Department Capt. Tim Mullinax said in a statement that the customer had arrived at the Marathon station early Thursday, determined it was being robbed and retrieved a gun from his vehicle.

Police say the suspect is accused of taking money and cigarettes, and then threatening to kill the clerk and forcing her to leave the store with him. Police say the customer confronted the suspect as the two left the store and fired several shots, striking the suspect.

Mullinax said no charges are pending, but the investigation is continuing.

Police did not identify anyone involved in the shooting.
