SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The family of a 5-year-old girl who was sexually abused by her bus driver will receive $175,000 as part of a settlement with the Canyons School District.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/298ht3U ) that the Utah Division of Risk Management will pay the girl’s father, ending a lawsuit in which the father claimed the district failed to protect his daughter and another girl who was abused on the bus.

District officials say the settlement is a financial agreement only and does not require any policy changes for the district. Spokesman Jeff Haney says the district acted quickly to asses any risk and make changes after the abuse was reported.

John Martin Carrell was sentenced last year to serve 15 years to life in prison for the abuse.
