TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida police say an armed man killed himself during an encounter with police.

Tallahassee Deputy Police Chief Darrell Furuseth said a preliminary investigation showed that 36-year-old Patrick Keeney died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after police were called to the man’s home early Thursday.

Police initially said Keeney, who’s white, died in an exchange of gunfire with two officers. Furuseth said two shots were fired in rapid succession, and police had recovered the bullet fired by Officer Douglas Kutchera. Furuseth didn’t know who shot first. He said both Kutchera and Officer Matthew Smidt tried to revive Keeney.

Police had been called by Kenney’s wife.

The officers were placed on administrative leave, which is normal procedure following a shooting involving an officer. Police haven’t disclosed the race of the officers.
