ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A federal judge has approved an agreement that puts Bernalillo County on a road to resolve a long-standing lawsuit over living conditions and medical services at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

The county says U.S. District Judge James A. Parkers approved the settlement this week.

The lawsuit was filed in 1995 by an inmate over jail conditions.

MDC was formerly operated by the city of Albuquerque but is now run by the county. It currently has about 1,300 inmates.

The county will be required to provide faster mental health and medical services for inmates and will be monitored. The jail has already implemented changes to reduce overcrowding.
