HANOVER, Pa. (AP) - A Pennsylvania man is being held for trial on charges he beat his roommate to death after the two were drinking and smoking crack together.

WHTM-TV reports (https://bit.ly/297hS84 ) 44-year-old Walter Smith Jr. was held for court on criminal homicide and aggravated assault charges following his preliminary hearing on Wednesday.

Smith is accused of attacking 44-year-old Mitchell Jones with a ceramic water pitcher in their Conewago Township apartment earlier this month. Jones was found with a plastic trash bag over his head.

Police say Smith told them Jones had tried to stab him with a screwdriver.

Smith’s public defender, Kristen Rice, didn’t immediately return a call for comment Thursday.
