TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the death of a man in his care.

The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday Larry Lee was convicted in June of murder in the death of 59-year-old Philip Carter, also finding Carter was particularly vulnerable due to a mild mental impairment.

The prosecutor’s office says Lee was Carter’s caregiver in May 2015 and had been for several years when he found Carter unresponsive.

Carter was treated at a Puyallup hospital for bed sores, one of which went down to the bone. Authorities say the sores had been packed with paper towels.

Prosecutors said Lee’s failure to treat the sores properly or seek medical care resulted in an infection that caused Carter’s death within hours of arriving at the hospital.
