CODY, Wyo. (AP) - A 40-year-old man has been sentenced to a year in jail for allowing seven of his horses and three dogs to die of starvation or other neglect in Park County.

The Powell Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/296MYdX ) that Michael A. Wood also will serve three years of unsupervised probation after his jail term and cannot own any pets.

Circuit Court Judge Bruce Waters noted that the number of animals that were abused or neglected required “serious consequences.”

Wood had pleaded guilty to 11 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Authorities say they found seven horses and three dogs dead and other underfed horses on his property in Clark.

Wood indicated in court that family issues starting late last year caused him to slide into depression.
