WILMINTON, N.C. (AP) - A Wilmington man has been sentenced to up to five years in prison in the flare gun shooting death of his roommate.

Local media outlets report that 53-year-old Larry Karl Gonzales pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter Wednesday in the 2009 shooting death of 20-year-old Alton Corey Vann.

Vann was found lying by a road with a gunshot wound to his head. Authorities say he was killed with a flare gun modified to fire shotgun shells

Vann and Gonzales were roommates who worked together at a local nursing home. Authorities say shortly after the shooting Gonzales tried to cash in Vann’s life insurance policy but the request was denied.

Gonzales was arrested in Texas two years ago and brought back to North Carolina.
