MCCOMB, Miss. (AP) - The McComb School District is seeking qualified teachers for its schools.

The McComb Enterprise-Journal (https://bit.ly/29qYL7b ) reports that the school district currently has slots available for math, science and special education teachers.

Jonathan McLendon, the district’s personnel director and recruiter, said he is searching for teachers across the state and beyond. He said there is a shortage of applicants and the district has to compete with about 100 school systems.

Math teachers are some of the most sought-after candidates. McLendon explained that few people are capable of teaching math at the high school level and even fewer actually hold degrees in the field. According to him, those with advanced knowledge of mathematics take their knowledge into the business world instead of education.

McLendon said he has been using the community of McComb as a selling point to potential teachers, adding that the connection between schools and the community is an important factor for recruiting instructors.

“The biggest thing we do is be creative,” McLendon he said about the recruitment process. “As a recruiter I sell a way of life.”

McLendon also said he is searching for candidates who can communicate effectively and can work with students.

“We’re interested in their communication,” he said. “They have to be able to connect with the kids.”
