CLEVELAND (AP) - The U.S. Secret Service agent in charge of security for the Republican National Convention says officials are encouraging people to visit downtown Cleveland during the convention in mid-July.

Secret Service Special Agent Ronald Rowe said at a news conference Thursday that some downtown streets will be closed or restricted to vehicle traffic near the convention venue, Quicken Loans Arena, and around the media center in the Cleveland Convention Center. Large trucks will be detoured from Interstate 90 where it passes close to Progressive Field, which is south of the arena.

Rowe says people interested in visiting downtown during the convention July 18-21 should consider taking public transportation.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams says the city has a “solid plan” for accommodating visitors and commerce that week.
