BOSTON (AP) - Federal officials say they’ve broken up a drug ring operating in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The office of U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Carmen Ortiz says nine men face cocaine and heroin distribution charges. Six were arrested Thursday morning and will be arraigned in Boston federal court Thursday afternoon. The other three are fugitives.

Among those charged is 43-year-old Luis Lopez, who had residences in both states.

Prosecutors say Lopez was the head of a drug trafficking organization that imported cocaine from Puerto Rico to the Massachusetts cities of New Bedford and Fall River.

Other defendants coordinated the distribution and sale of the drug shipments, some of which came through the mail and ended up in Providence, Rhode Island.

Lopez’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, didn’t immediately comment.
