STUART, Iowa (AP) - A 9-year-old girl is in critical condition after nearly drowning in an aquatics center pool in western Iowa.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/1U4WD7W ) that the incident happened at Stuart Aquatics Center around 2:45 p.m. Friday.

Stuart police say that when emergency services arrived, they found lifeguards performing CPR on the child. The girl was taken to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Officials believe the child suffered a medical emergency while in the pool. Witnesses and staff say lifeguards immediately noticed the child was in trouble and jumped in to save her.

The incident remains under investigation.
